(to be translated) In our cleaning process, the covers spend first a night in a chemical oxidation bath, which dissolves pollutions and makes it possible to rinse them off. In a second step, stubborn dirt and mold is removed. The variety of possible pollution makes an individual approach per boat cover inevitable and at the same time allows to go through a series of chemical cleaning steps that are in relation to the requirements of the textile in process. Because our manual procedure is geared to this, we can treat covers in an outstandingly gentle way, without harming the textile overly.
Do windows take damage in the RED GULL process?
Windows do not take any damage by processing or chemicals as long as they are healthy them selves. In this the windows behave as any other part of the cover. If not damaged by UV or weather, it can be cleaned without any risk. However the windows of quite old covers can have UV damages that are not visible. The judging of this being the case before treatment is almost impossible. A indicator for covers having a UV damage in their windows, is when the windows lost all their flexibility and/or start breaking among the stitchings. In that case the windows should have been renewed a long time ago. Note: Boat cover windows need to be flexible, so the cover can be set up under tension. Windows that loose their flexibility start getting hard and rigid. The reason for this behaviour is that the chemical softeners evaporate from the plastic over the years. On exposed covers the windows lost their softeners after 3-4 years and then need replacement.
Important to know: Never ever remove broken windows from your cover, this makes it virtually impossible to install newones and your cover is a total loss case! New windows will be installed always over the old ones, which are cut away after the istallation is completed. This way the new windows will be installed perfectly in line with the tension forces and directions of the cover.
Our above-average cleaning performance also has a technical justification and requirement also: An impregnation develops its full capacity only on clean cloth. A boat cover cloth should not be overly stressed mechanically during a cleaning process, since it has had already severe impacts from UV radiation and weather.
Tarpaulins are only clean if they are mold-free. Mold is unfortunately no pollution, but a fouling or fungal affection, which is quite capable, to survive fairly aggressive cleaners and to re-expand, if not fully removed by disinfection. Be aware this has to be done with the help of Chlorine solutions, which is not a friend of the covercloth and the stitchings, that will be weakened over the years by UV radiation and humidity. Unfortunately cover builders use mixed fibres of cotton and polyester to stitch your covers. The cotton part is not resistant to UV and humidity.- When it has faded far enough, the stitchings start breaking. A cleaning with chlorine can accelerate/intensify this decline of the stitchings.
Duration of the conditioning process
The RED GULL PRO-2 Cover Conditioning process is a crafting process, where each sprayhood and coveris manually processed, side by side, several times and has to be dried in between. The pure manufacturing process can take 2-4 days depending on the cloth or tarpaulin material and it’s particular drying behaviour.
Machining process of a boat cover
All processing steps take place under constant supervision, which allows individual treatment of each sprayhood or cover. This allows us, to avoid the destructive disadvantages of machine cleaning and to work purposefully on the needs of the fabric. This, most importantly, also allows us to maintain the current fabric strength in our chemical cleaning process.
Comparison test boats magazine 03/2011
In a comparison test of the German “Boote Magazin” (Europe biggest powerboat magazine!), issue 03/11, processed boat covers by RED GULL Finland and the former German Novosails GmbH, were compared to a virgin and the untreated dirty counterpart tarpaulin. Our treatment was certified excellent technical values, such as a 160 N higher tear strength of the cloth, a stretchability at the level of the new product and a slightly higher thread density, which is a targeted but difficult to dose effect to the cover in treatment. A slightly raised thread density allows to set up a cover on the boat, under an appropriate tension for a perfect fit. Without this, the stretched fibres would cause a wobbly fit, that would make a sprayhood move into all direction when sailing.
